LFG Presents: This is War

Aug 12, 2013

Last week, the Kickstarter backers were the first to see LFG Presents: This is War.

Due to their kindness and support, it is now available for everyone to enjoy and share.

Without further comment, I give, This is War:

-Because I Can.

  • http://profile.fixato.org/ FiXato

To be honest, the first sketched video looked funnier and more interesting than this…

  • Keelie Caitlin Smith

    “For PONY.”

    • http://www.the-gutters.com sohmer

      RIGHT???

  • Wesley Foxx

So, being generous with how much the backer perk stuff cost and assuming that the short went 100% overbudget (I would be very sad if it did, it looks less polished even than Slaughter Your World, and unrelatedly, in my opinion wasn’t as funny or sound as good.) does the extra $50k or so mean we might be seeing some progress on the actual movie?

    • JackthePlaid

What movie? He already said he’s spent the money on household bills.

      • regularjoe

where is the proof of this?

        • http://www.the-gutters.com sohmer

Nothing this dude says is real. Don’t give it any thought.

If you’re interested though, I broke things down here: http://www.lfgcomic.com/transparency/

          • Marco Vivero

Thank you! Somehow I missed that post. Where was it posted? For backers of the short or for the game KS? Anyhow… I stand by what I posted, people backed a musical short which you delivered, not a movie… the other $37,063 are profit and nowhere on KS says you have to explain where it went.

          • JackthePlaid

He spent it all on streak-free Windex.

      • Marco Vivero

Did he really say that? I missed it, please tell me where, I think it’s funny!. But I don’t think he used the money to pay household bills, he seems to do OK financially from what I can see. But what is really true is that he doesn’t think backers deserve a single explanation of what happened to the money (before someone rants on me, yes I’m a backer)… and in a way he’s right… I think the way he sees it is “you paid $10 for a musical short and you have it, you can’t complain”. The problem is with Kickstarter, not with BF; as long as you get the perk stuff you paid for, they don’t owe you anything else, even if it was more than 900% founded. It was a misunderstanding on most backers who tought they were funding the LFG Movie and forgot that they were actually just funding the short. As with any other Kickstarter, anything you get above your goal minus the cost of the perks is revenue and last I checked people can do what ever they want with the revenue of their work.

      • FearTheHero

        Seriously, dude, get a life.

        • Kang the Unbalanced

I’m starting a Kickstarter to get you a sense of humour.

      • Kang the Unbalanced

No, no, no! It was cocaine. Didn’t you read the line items???

(For those whose sense of humour was shot off in ‘Nam, yes, I’m joking.)

    • Caffinated

If this was the best they could do on a short, I pity the people who throw money at him for a movie.

  • McGrewer

He got hit with a rock because he didn’t say for pony.

    • http://www.the-gutters.com sohmer

      True story. ;)

  • Graham Krueger

Perfect! (Tell me we’ll see a lyrical transcription soon- after Richard gets shot I can’t make out much of the duet parts). Fantastic animation- the purple apron is finally seen in its glory, but I’m just glad to see more work. And the singing is just adorable.

    • http://www.the-gutters.com sohmer

There’s one in the KS campaign if you’re a backer, but I’m sure we’ll toss up the lyrics in a bit!

  • JackthePlaid

The animation on this looks a bit shit, yeah? Remind anyone of that creeper Legend of Zelda TV series from the 80′s where every movement takes three times longer to complete than normal? Congrats on wasting more money on shit product.

  • Chesshire

so much happy!! I may just set something on fire to celebrate

    • http://www.the-gutters.com sohmer

      It’s what Richard would want.

  • Anonymous

I must say that I really enjoyed this. I think it’s a lot more polished than slaughter your world and the animation is just different, but not in a bad way.

Seeing this completed will certainly encourage me to take part in future kickstarters,

    Thank you!

    • http://www.the-gutters.com sohmer

      Thank you hugely! ;)

  • FearTheHero

It’s a parody of “Part of Your World” from Disney’s The Little Mermaid.

    • Dru

“Slaughter Your World” is from “Part of Your World”.
      This one’s from Aladdin.

      • FearTheHero

My bad XD I posted this when I hadn’t had coffee yet. You are absolutely right, my apologies!

        • FearTheHero

Love how Sam Sharpe attacks me for being wrong. It’s a mistake dude, chill out.

        • Dru

          I understand. :)
I hope you didn’t take mine as an attack. I do stuff like that all the time, and I tend to appreciate when people put my mind right.
And, to be fair, both of them involved “World”.

  • magiceatsyou

Uh… It’s “A Whole New World” From Aladdin. WHY DOES NOBODY HERE KNOW THEIR DISNEY!? -.-

  • Lady of Whitepaw

That video was what originally brought me to LFG, and also happened to be one of the coolest things I have ever seen on Youtube. I applaud you guys. Seriously.

  • malimber

Dont get me wrong. I like LFG, but people paid money for that? Does Disney know you used thier IP. Last time I checked they tend to be fairly sue happy when they find people have been using it.

    • regularjoe

      Ever heard of Parody?

      • Rayshe

Joe is right. You do not need rights to a IP in order to do a parody in canada.

      • Kang the Unbalanced

That’s just south of Manitoba, right? Terrific cheese.

  • DKNN

I actually really enjoyed this, but a couple of things about the animation made it feel a bit unfinished. In some places the animation was really smooth and others it was quite choppy (but this might just be my computer) and there was never any feeling of weight in the fighting, the walking around was fine but I never felt any sense of struggle in force during collisions. I also wanted Richard to say FOR PONY! with more force…but that’s just cos that’s how I always imagine him saying it (really over the top). The background at 2:30 to 2:40 also seems unfinished, there are houses and then just…grey.

All in all it was very good if a little unpolished and I’m incentivised to back the next LFG kickstarter. I would have done so for the game actually, but it was multiplayer only and I wanted a single player option.

  • That Guy

The music was good and voice acting was good. The overall concept was a good one, but the
    execution was very lack luster.

Fire your animator. They ripped you off and did a less than professional job. There are
many technical issues and poor animation decisions.

Overall there are issues with consistency in line thickness and perspective. The key framing
and motion paths for the bulk of the animation is off. The movement of the virtual camera was not very good. Should have chosen easy ease on some of the key frames. There were inconsistencies with when background elements were blurred and depth of field in the compositions.

The use of blood felt inconsistent and I was a little sad no one was immolated by Richard.

The composition of many of the shots felt cluttered and/or busy. It looked like many short cuts were taken in the animation.

The motion between the clouds and ground is off. I think it is supposed to be like the camera is moving through the clouds but the animation doesn’t bear that out.

The background animation is obviously frozen until almost the 27s mark.

The colorist messed up on the boulder launched from the catapult. It was brownish but
changes to the color of the cover once in the air.

There is some stretch/distortion on the guys in the background of the flying boulder. Their size and proportion are out-of-whack. Very obvious at the 38s mark.

The outlines on the couple huddling around the 39s mark were so shaky and scribble like it was distracting.

Kale looks like he was poorly traced and animated in toon boom by a college intern. His
swords look more often like pointy grey sticks than blades.

The scale of the arrow that passes behind kale’s head around the 48s mark is way off. The shaft is larger than the spear that flies in front of him 4 seconds later.

The size and perspective on the orcs charging the little archers defending was out of balance vs the background plate. The people in the background needed to be smaller or moved further back in z space.

A lot of Richard’s movements seem like they have been slowed down by 10-20% from what they should be.

Around the 1:34 mark, it seems like no one put in the in-betweens for Richard.

When Kale is I suppose fighting someone one handed while Richard is playing with the gnome head, it might have been a good idea and visual to have shown some of the result of his action, as it just looks like he is twirling his sword around.

Kale running up to Richard around 2:06 didn’t look right.

The inconsistent line thickness is especially apparent around 2:06. The back ground plate is one line thickness, the building is another, and kale and Richard another.

There were inconsistencies with lighting, shading, and the shadows. For example the buildings didn’t seem to cast shadows but the people did.

The blood reflection did look good.

Foley and sound design left much to be desired.

Overall I was disappointed. I also don’t see over 30k in animation here. The quality just isn’t there. It looked cheap.

    • regularjoe

I would really hate to go to a movie with you and not be able to enjoy it as you critique everything about it to the nth degree

      • Andreas Ringlstetter

But he is right, and he wasn’t even picky, there were at lot more flaws than just the obvious ones he choose to point out.

Especially the background animation was just terrible. Even a static background would have been better than these repetitive gif-loops.

Compositing is just a terrible failure in this project.
There has been put quite some effort in the animation of the individual assets, thats still clearly visible, but whoever did compositing for the mass scenes, obviously had no experience whatsoever.

If you don’t have the budget for a fancy background animation, then just don’t do it. Better a fine static background, than a crappy animation.

        Also a really weird camera…
Zoom out. Stop. Zoom in. Stop. Slide sidewards. Stop.
        Linear interpolation between keyframes. WHY?
One of the basic rules in computer animations: Use splines for the virtual camera and avoid unnecessary use of zoom.

  • smith

i feel the lyrics could have been alot better

  • camellia

It’s not the style or the colour scheme, it’s that it’s a lot worse in quality than the first one, and after all the anticipation for this video it’s a huge let down. Especially since we helped to fund it. The animation is shoddy. Some points were listed in another comment, perhaps a bit more in detail than I would have put them, but I was looking forward to this and I was disappointed. I watched the video wanting to love it, and I was disappointed. If it was the same quality as the last video, I wouldn’t be unhappy with this. As it is, I can listen to the song. I just hate watching the video because I feel like I was ripped off.

You don’t have to read the comments, so please whine about us voicing our opinions elsewhere, rather than telling us to keep our mouths shut. I think you need to go find out what a troll is before you throw around the word so casually.

    • geist3047

Well that’s the unfortunate part now isn’t it? I have just as much right to bitch about whiners as you do to bitch about me for pointing it out. Next time save your money if you’re that dissatisfied. No reason to feel ripped off twice.

      • Kang the Unbalanced

I have a question. When someone raises valid points, that are supported by oh let’s say visual evidence, why do you characterize it as whining?

  • JGJones

Any chance of subtitles/captions? I’m sure I’m not the only deaf person that enjoy the comics too! Cheers!

  • Fullmetalpanic

Hm, Kale looked a bit…I don’t know…a bit like a ragdoll at the beginning…but else I really did like it and I’m glad I got to see this. Greatly appreciated.

  • DisGrunt

Well, you delivered. That’s the bright side. It’s kinda shit, though, so there’s that. I mean, all that money and Slaughter Your World is still better in just about every single way? Wow. What happened?

And for the record, I did not back this project (or any other for that matter). In hindsight, I’m quite glad I didn’t.

  • Andreas Ringlstetter

It doesn’t, thanks to vector graphics and you don’t need to put in more details, the added sharpness can also make a huge difference.

What does cause the cost to skyrocket though, are background animations. All those tiny little assets in the background, which often enough have more details than the foreground animation.
Which is why they used a lot of copy&paste and only short loops for the background animations in this clip…
In hindsight it would have been smarter, to avoid the mass scenes in the background and to stick with static backgrounds, the “low budget” could have been hidden quite well that way.

  • Andreas Ringlstetter

It’s not about it looking different.

It is all about cuts on the wrong end.

The foreground animation is quite decent, it could have used some polishing, but it does it’s job.

Why go with background animations if you don’t have the budget to do it properly? This starts with the rather tiny number of distinct assets and ends with major flaws in the composition.

You can do great video clips with a low budget, if you are just willing to ditch features you don’t have the budget for. Nobody is going to miss them, like the previous movie which only had static backgrounds, yet it made the best use of them and featured a much better storyboard in return for the low animation budget.

But if you try to add them anyway at any cost, then the result is poor quality and you will have to make even further cuts on other parts of the project which reduces the quality even further.

  • Rayshe

i Enjoyed it, however not nearly as much as slaughter your world.

  • Barbara

I loved the song and the voice acting, and loved the idea, but I didn’t like the animation. As in, its style. Plus, it looks a bit unprofessional with its unusual… well, I’m not an animator, so this will sound silly, but the weird “zoom ins” and “zoom outs” and then you can see the thickness and thinness of the lines and it all kinda screws up the depth and all that jazz…. but yeah. It was not what I expected, but it was definitely fun. I just wish you had a bit better animator, heh.

  • Kiyomi Nakamura

Gosh… I’ve never read so much negativity and discouragement in one place >_>; I realize that some of you may lack even the creativity to offer the sort of ‘constructive’ criticism that might be useful, but you really should find something better to do with your time. As far as you’re concerned Sohmer, I’m honestly impressed at how well you weather all the naysayers without even so much as deleting the more obviously hostile comments (as well as outright lies). I’m not sure I could be so professional myself… I really enjoyed this short, the lines flowed together quite nicely, nothing felt forced or out of place and I really hope we get to see even more content like this in the future!

  • Kang the Unbalanced

I feel that the lyrics are good and your ears are defective.

  • Ryan Judkins

I thought the animation was fun, but this short just didn’t make sense in terms of its narrative or the interaction of various elements. What’s going on in the town? Why are these two there? Why, especially, do they join forces and what’s the dynamic between them? The soft and touching melody of the song contrasts the slaughter in the visuals and the lyrics, but the contrast isn’t played up enough to be really funny or meaningful. Why not? Where are things left when the song wraps up? What’s going to happen next? Or is this song representative of a timeless, definitive dynamic between these two characters? If so, perhaps that could be emphasized more. Overall, though I love this comic and Blind Ferret’s work, this short just isn’t quite “there.” It just doesn’t work — yet.

I would love to see the lyrics ^_^

Please just stay where you are
I will come there and save you
No one this day will harm you,
if I get to you in time

      Please stay right where are!
When you run, the meat gets less tender
      Just lie down and surrender
      Could you marinade in lime?

      For this is war!
It’s where the strong protect the weak
I know not if I’ll die,
      but know I’ll try!
I’d gladly give my life for others

      For this is war!
I do not care whose side I’m on!
I’ll kill a troll or gnome,
      or burn a home
      and it was fun
to start this war, who knew?? HAHAHAHA!

Won’t you please help end this war with me?

      Unlimited death!
      Infinite lootable corpses!
      Casting, stabbing and cursing!
      Does it really matter why?

      But this is war!

(There’s a spear through my chest!)

It’s where the proud defend the meek

(What you did was an error…)

We should fight side by side!
      To turn the tide!
The said you were a “feeble, undead freak”!

      For this is war!

      (And did you like animals?)

Now I know whose side I’m on!

(Yes, the Trolls call you sickly!)

Both (I think?): I’ll slay them with a grin!
      It’s reassured for the win!
Let’s ensure that each last one is gone!

      We’ll end this war
      (For this is war)
      We heard their plea
      (I’m a WMD!)
      We answered their prayers!
      (He fell down some stairs)
      For honor!

      For Pony…

Now I’m going to say, that I’m pretty sure the lyrics aren’t 100% right…if someone could correct the wrong ones, I can edit them and take your criticism into consideration. Thank you!
